Create a story

Create a story

Start a New Story on the Dashboard, with a story name typed

  1. Go to the Dashboard (click All Stories if you are inside a story).
  2. Under Start a New Story, type a Story Name.
  3. Click Story Structure and choose the shape of your story, for example Save the Cat or Four Act. See Choose a structure. If you’d rather make up your own sections, choose Free Form.
  4. Set your Page Target: how long you want the script to be, in pages. It starts at 90.
  5. Click Create Story.

The story opens with its sections ready for your beat sheet. Next: Sections and beat notes.

You can also start a story from inside another one: open Story Actions (the three dots beside the story name) and choose New Story.

Change the Page Target later

The Page Target sits at the top of the story, beside the structure, followed by “pp”. Type a new number. Your sections’ page ranges update to match. See The beat sheet calculator.

How many stories you can make

On the Standard plan you can make 3 stories. If you have used them, the button reads Upgrade to Create. Share TalkingDraft with a friend, buy Unlimited Stories, or go Pro to make as many as you like. See Plans and the Pro trial.
